302 Redirect
What is this term?
A 302 redirect indicates that a URL has moved temporarily. Users are sent to another page for a limited time, while search engines are told to keep the original URL in their index rather than treating the move as permanent.
What it means in grocery ecommerce
Grocery retailers use 302 redirects for short-lived campaigns, out-of-stock holding pages, regional store tests, or maintenance windows. The shopper still reaches a useful page—another category, a substitute SKU, or a pickup notice—without rewriting the site’s long-term URL structure.
Why it matters
Using a 302 when a change is temporary avoids handing ranking equity to a campaign URL that will disappear. That protects category SEO, keeps ads and emails stable, and reduces the risk of shoppers bookmarking a URL that should not become the canonical product or store page.
Example
A grocer runs a weekend meal-kit promotion on a temporary URL and 302-redirects the main offers page to it. After Sunday night, the 302 is removed so the original offers URL returns without implying a permanent move to search engines.
