301 Redirect

What is this term?

What it means in grocery ecommerce

In grocery ecommerce, a 301 redirect is used when category pages, product URLs, store-locator paths, or promotional landing pages change for good. Shoppers who follow old emails, ads, or bookmarks still reach the live catalog, pickup, or delivery experience instead of a 404.

Retailers also use 301s after migrations, rebrands, or SKU consolidations so inventory and content live on one canonical URL.

Why it matters

Permanent redirects protect conversion and organic traffic when URLs change. Broken grocery links mean missed orders, weaker SEO, and more support contacts. A correct 301 keeps demand flowing to the current assortment and fulfillment options.

Example

A grocer publishes a new seasonal landing page at a cleaner URL and sets a 301 from the old campaign link. Shoppers who bookmarked the previous page still arrive, and search engines consolidate ranking signals onto the new URL instead of splitting them.
