Dark Store
What is this term?
A dark store is a retail location closed to walk-in shoppers and used only to fulfill online grocery orders. Layout, inventory, and labor are optimized for picking, packing, and dispatch rather than a traditional supermarket experience.
What it means in grocery ecommerce
Grocery dark stores hold the same SKU mix customers expect online, but aisles and processes are designed for pickers and couriers. They sit between store picking and large warehouses: closer to demand than a DC, more efficient than congested shop-floor picking.
Why it matters
Dark stores can improve speed, order accuracy, and capacity when store picking hits its limit. They require inventory investment and demand density. Used well, they scale ecommerce without crowding in-store customers.
Example
A retailer opens a compact urban facility with no public aisles. Online orders from nearby postcodes are picked there for same-day delivery, while stores remain focused on walk-in trade.
